The Orange County Sanitation District’s Industrial Pretreatment Program (Source Control) has been promoting pollution prevention, resource and water conservation, and recycling since the early 1990s. OCSD permits and inspects industries in various sectors to achieve compliance with state and federal requirements. Learn about OCSD’s “solution to pollution is NOT dilution” strategy, and how the District collaborates with industries such circuit board/semiconductor manufacturing, metal plating shops, and commercial laundries, to help them successfully implement cost saving measures and improved compliance.
Session 3: Facilities Roofing Update – Building Code Compliance, OSHA Regs and Energy Conservation Requirements 9:35 a.m. – 10:35 a.m.

This session will provide a review of regulatory changes and possible implications for your facility when you are planning or conducting roof maintenance or replacement. Included will be updated building code requirements as they relate to fire ratings, wind uplift calculations and removal requirements. Hear about the innovative LEED Silver seven-story parking structure at the Kaiser Permanente Orange County Medical Center in Anaheim, which opened in the fall of 2012. Hospital parking garages typically use a significant amount of energy because building codes require them to be well-lit at all hours, but the energy-efficient design of this structure will save substantial amounts of electricity through use of high-efficiency lighting sources, fixtures, and sensors. The speakers (representatives of the Center and the contractor) will discuss these lighting systems, as well as the other efficient construction features that contributed to the LEED Silver certification of this 1,562-space parking structure.

Flow-flow equipment is a focus of maintenance managers at all facilities because of the challenging environment in which it operates. This can and usually does include pressure, flow rates, vibration, cavitation or corrosive liquids that can wear, damage and erode equipment. This session will discuss ways to provide high-integrity rebuilding and repairs of fluid-flow equipment without replacing equipment. Topics will include pump housings, impellers, piping, valves, heat exchangers and shaft repair.

Session 9: Integrating Vibration and Thermography Technologies for Troubleshooting Motors and Drives 8:25 a.m. – 9:25 a.m.

The speaker will discuss the challenges in diagnosing and troubleshooting motors and drives. He will describe how vibration monitors and thermographic testers can be used for maintenance and predictive maintenance applications, both separately and in combination, to keep equipment operating smoothly and help to extend motor and drive system life.

This session will provide an overview of the common types of cooling towers, how they work, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Attendees will learn how to assess performance and hear about strategies for improving performance and energy efficiency. Included will be information on basic cooling tower design and performance, how to calculate water usage and reduce water loss, and the most effective water conditioning and treatment methods. Also learn how scheduled maintenance will save energy, and about other methods to improve performance and save energy.
Session 11: What You Need to Know About OSHA’s New GHS Standard That Replaces the Hazard Communication Standard 9:35 a.m. – 10:35 a.m.

Last year, OSHA made the decision to replace the Hazard Communication Standard with a standard based on the United Nations Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals. Those Material Safety Data Sheets and labels for hazardous chemicals now in circulation need to be revised as per the GHS requirements by June 1, 2015. But the staff training deadline is this year -- Dec. 1, 2013. Find out what you need to know to ensure compliance at your facility.

This session will describe how to make any existing light fixture into an LED fixture at a fraction of the cost of buying new, with equal or surpassing brightness. The speaker will discuss how to retrofit T8/T5, commercial walkways, an external wall pack, an interior recess, and streetlights into an LED fixture at 10 to 20% the cost of an entire LED fixture. Gain theoretical and practical knowledge about LED, such as return on investment, and obtain the information you need to equip yourself with this newest energy-efficient technology at your facility.
